Statement on the status of the Fund’s investments in local equity

Thursday, February 21, 2019

This submission is in response to a recent article that appeared in the Business Weekly and Review newspaper dated Friday 25thJanuary 2019.

The BPOPF confirms that there was a market value decline over the 12 months to December 2018 in the local equity portfolio. This was due to declines in share prices of some of the stocks on the Botswana Stock Exchange. Also some Equity managers were selling equities and holding more cash; a flight to safety.

Because of the way stock markets fluctuate due to different market factors, the Fund has taken measures to minimise the risk of loss by diversifying across different asset classes and markets/countries.

Members are therefore assured that their retirement assets are being carefully and diligently invested.
